Rice Bag Pattern
First of all, what is a rice bag and what is its purpose? Very simply put, it is a cordless heating pad! These simple bags add lots of warmth to aching muscles, with just enough weight to add more comfort and help them stay in place.
The dimensions given make a tube type bag that is the perfect size for your neck and shoulders, or to wrap around an arm, leg, wrist or ankle. You can alter the pattern to suit your own needs.
They make great quick and easy gifts, and also very inexpensive.
Cut a 22” x 12” rectangle out of a piece of muslin or other inexpensive fabric.
Fold right sides together in half along the length so that you have 22” x 6”.
Sew the long side and one end closed with a ½” seam. Turn right side out.
Mark the tube into thirds, drawing 2 sewing lines, but don’t sew it yet. Your marks should be at approximately 7” and 14” from the sewn end.
Pour ½ - ¾ cup of uncooked rice into the bag. Use regular rice, not instant rice. Making sure there are no rice kernels in the way of your needle, sew along the first drawn line, nearest the bottom of the bag. Back stitch at the beginning and the end of the seam, making sure to close the bag at that 1/3 point, to keep the rice in that section.
Pour ¾ - 1 cup of rice in the bag for the middle section. Repeat the process to close the middle section.
Pour ½ - ¾ cup of rice in the last section of the bag. Turn the raw edges of the bag to the inside and stitch it closed…securely.
Make a removable, washable cover for the bag by cutting a piece of fabric, (flannel is perfect and very comfortable), 22 ½” x 12 ½”, hem one of the short ends, fold lengthwise, right sides together, sew the long side and raw edged end closed (use a ¼” seam this time), turn right side out, and there you have it!
Now, pop it in the microwave for 1 minute (lay it as flat as possible for maximum heat), then sit back with it and enjoy!
(Warning – the first few times you heat the bag you will smell the rice but that is normal and not offensive). I have used the same bag for over 2 years and it still does just as good as it did the first time! Just think…a gift that keeps on giving and is oh so practical!
